Welcome to Versions of Security

Greetings.

With the upcoming release of my new record Always Been, I wanted a place to share news, music, stories, videos, tour updates, recommendations, and more. Many of the other platforms have lost some luster, and the written nature of this one is appealing to me.

Always Been is due April 4 on Tamarac Recordings/Thirty Tigers. Pre-order is available here. The album was recorded throughout 2024 with producer Adam Granduciel (The War on Drugs). His TWOD bandmates played on a lot of it, and it was mixed wonderfully by the amazing Jon Low. Our friends Kathleen Edwards and Sam Fender lent their beautiful voices in a few places.. The first single “People of Substance” is out now. Thank you to all who have offered kind words about the song.

Going into this record, I felt like I knew and understood the characters within the songs better than I ever have before. I knew more about their backstories, their relationships, their triumphs, their struggles, etc. I could really see them. I’m very excited for you to meet them too.

To that end, I created Lousy With Ghosts, a limited edition 92-page companion book to the record. These eleven stories take place in the same universe as the songs. They offer deeper looks at the main characters, and shine a brighter light on some of the people along the fringes. I’ll share a story from the book here soon, and you can pre-order that here.

There’s plenty of other stuff going on too. I’ll be with The Hold Steady in London on March 6/7/8/9 to celebrate our annual The Weekender event. I’ll be on tour supporting Bob Mould in April. I’ll be back with The Hold Steady in Minneapolis on May 1/2/3/4 to celebrate 20 years of our record Separation Sunday.

I also continue to do my podcast That’s How I Remember It. Keep tuning in because we’ve got some great conversations coming up. On top of that, I’ve been working on new podcast with Jody Avirgan and Talkhouse called Summer Album / Winter Album, which will debut at On Air Fest in Brooklyn on Feb 21. More on that soon as well.
